Discovering Europe’s most splendid landscapes may mean taking a bike tour through the western Balkan region and its Mediterranean enclaves. Starting from Dubrovnik, this bike tour weaves through the undulating terrains of the Dinaric Alps. You’ll cycle along azure coastlines dotted with historic medieval towns, villages, and valleys between Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro.

Each of these countries offers different cultures, landscapes, and histories, from the rugged mountains of Bosnia and Montenegro to the picturesque seaside routes of Croatia.

The tour is addressed to those individuals who truly value the beauty of nature, historical richness, and environmental beauty. The tour is made for cyclists admiring long daily rides with difficult sections, but at the end of their efforts, they are rewarded with beautiful views and panoramas. A Self-Guided Bike Tour is a type of cycling adventure where you have the freedom to plan and navigate at your pace. Our dedicated tour guide and support team will handle hotel bookings, logistics, and baggage transport, ensuring you enjoy a hassle-free and carefree experience.

Day 1: Welcome to Croatia! | City Walk

Upon your arrival at Dubrovnik airport – one of the most vibrant cities and ‘The Pearl of the Adriatic’ – you will be welcomed by Mediterras representatives for a 30-minute drive transfer to your downtown hotel.

The afternoon will be dedicated to a detailed briefing regarding the itinerary planned for your bike tour to Croazia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. This session isn’t just about the timetable, but get ready for an immersive induction to the cultures and landscapes you’ll be exploring so you’re well-equipped for the days ahead.

In order to ensure that your cycling experience is trouble-free, a private bike fitting session shall be arranged for you wherein our team of experienced experts will alter your two-wheeled buddy as per your need.

The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore Dubrovnik. This ancient city is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and brings many treasures of history and beauty. Walk the famous Stradun, Dubrovnik’s main street, where the streets are polished limestone that gleams like pearls in the sun over the Adriatic. Marvel at the intricate baroque architecture of the Rector’s Palace or lose yourself in the serene reverie of the medieval cloister of the Franciscan Monastery. Stroll along the iconic city walls to discover breathtaking views of the old town and the sea. These walls, a symbol of the indestructibility of Dubrovnik, have been protecting the city since the 7th century and giving an indispensable look at it.

Day 2: From Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi | Cycling 65 Km / 910 m

After a good breakfast at the hotel featuring local flavors, you’ll be transferred just outside the town center as your cycling tour can start. You’ll start pedaling towards the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and down to the quaint town of Trebinje.

The itinerary took you through the hilly heart of the enchanting triangle that folds Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Croatia. Every pedal stroke disclosed a new vista, an alternation of luxuriant green and rocky coastline.

The bike ride will be between a clusters of micro village where life moving at a peaceful pace, rounded by the warm smiles from the locals.

Our destination of the day was the town Herceg Novi, nestled on the Montenegro coast. The town, hidden gem by the Adriatic, is a melody of historic charm and scenic beauty, cobblestone streets with old stone houses, breathtaking views of the sea.

The day ends in the cozy 3/4-star hotel situated in the place of Herceg Novi.

Day 3: From Herceg Novi to Kotor | Cycling 40Km/200m

Your day begins with a delightful breakfast at your hotel, offering a range of local and international cuisine to energize you for the day ahead.

The day’s main activity is a scenic bike ride along the coastal area of the Bay of Kotor, often referred to as the Montenegro fjord. This stunning region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, combining the beauty of the sea with the rugged charm of the surrounding mountains.

The route is mostly flat, making it a pleasant and accessible experience for cyclists of all levels. You’ll pedal along the edge of the Bay of Kotor through several medieval historical towns, each brimming with charm and history. These towns are like windows into the past, showcasing well-preserved architecture and a rich cultural heritage.

A highlight of the whole bike tour is a stop in the town of Kotor itself. This UNESCO World Heritage site is known for its well-preserved medieval buildings and impressive fortifications. You’ll have some time to explore the town’s narrow streets, historic squares, and perhaps visit some of its notable landmarks, like the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon or the Maritime Museum.

After your exploration of Kotor, you’ll continue cycling towards your accommodation for the night. Your destination is a comfortable 3-star hotel located in the vicinity of the town of Kotor. Day 4: From Kotor to Konavle | Cycling 70Km/755m

Today, you’ll be venturing along the scenic other side of the bay, towards the border that leads into Croatia. This segment of the bike tour promises a blend of fresh sea breezes and captivating views, setting the tone for an adventurous day.

Upon crossing the border into Croatia, you’ll start cycling through the Konavle countryside. This region is nestled between the majestic Balkan mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Pedaling through Konavle, you’ll be sourronded by lush landscapes and traditional Croatian rural life. The area is renowned for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it a cyclist’s paradise.

Your destination for the afternoon is the village of Gruda, located in the heart of Konavle. Upon arrival, you’ll have ample free time to immerse yourself in the local charm. Gruda offers a unique opportunity to explore the Konavle area. Whether it’s strolling through the village streets, interacting with friendly locals, or simply enjoying the peaceful countryside, there’s plenty to discover and cherish.

As the day winds down, you’ll settle in for an overnight stay in Cavtat, a picturesque town in the Konavle area. Your accommodation will be a comfortable 3-star hotel, carefully selected to enhance your experience of the region. Cavtat is known for its stunning seaside setting and historical significance, providing a perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection on the day’s adventures. Day 5: From Konavle to Zavala | Cycling 60Km/150m

After enjoying breakfast, a brief car journey brings you closer to the Bosnia and Herzegovina border. This is where your today bike ride begins. Your starting point is the town of Ivanica. From here, you’ll follow the historic railroad trail. This trail meanders through the valley of Popovo polje, and the Trebišnjica river.

The 1990s were a tumultuous time for this region, as it was engulfed in the throes of war. As you cycle along this path, you can still see remnants and echoes of that era. However, the journey is not just6 about history. It also offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of the region.

The landscape here is strikingly different from the coastal areas. It’s a tapestry of lush greenery, rolling hills, and the tranquil river, creating a picturesque backdrop for your ride.

Your destination for the day is the village of Zavala, alternatively known as Ravno. Usually, you’ll arrive there in the afternoon, giving you time to explore and enjoy some free time.
Accommodation for the night is a cozy Bed and Breakfast in Zavala/Ravno. This accommodation promises a comfortable and authentic experience.

Day 6: Zavala to Ston | Cycling 40Km/630m

Today, we embark on an exhilarating cycling journey, traversing the picturesque valley and the quaint rural landscapes of Herzegovina. Our destination is the border of Croatia, specifically the Pelješac peninsula and the historic town of Ston. This region is renowned for several remarkable features. Ston, a town steeped in medieval history, boasts the longest defensive walls in Europe, a testament to its rich past. As the gateway to the Pelješac peninsula, Ston is also celebrated for its viticulture, particularly the production of red wines.

The surrounding area of Ston is known for its oyster and mussel farms. These aquatic treasures contribute significantly to the local cuisine and culture.

Your cycling route today includes a hillside segment, a mix of gentle climbs and downhills.

Upon our arrival in Ston, you’ll have some free time to explore the town and taste the local oyster.

Day 7: Ston to Orebić | Cycling 30/50Km/400/600m

Cycling along the Pelješac Peninsula is an experience that stands out as one of the most picturesque and enjoyable bike rides in the Mediterranean region. This ride combining excellent road conditions with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding islands, an almost surreal cycling environment.

The route is not just about the sea views; it also riding through lush vineyards, ancient villages and towns, nestled in hidden bays.

The culmination of this scenic bike ride is the town of Orebić, known for its maritime history and stunning beaches. Arriving here around lunchtime, you can explore the town and enjoy local cuisine, or simply relax by the sea.

In the afternoon, the journey continues, but this time, it’s a more relaxed phase with a shuttle (car transfer) to the city of Dubrovnik. This transfer is a convenient way to sit back and enjoy the landscape as it shifts from the rural charm of Pelješac to the more urban scenery of Dubrovnik. The arrival in Dubrovnik is scheduled for the late afternoon or early evening.
